The Department of Structures has been working at the Faculty of Civil Engineering since its foundation on January 1, 1997, but its original name was the Department of Industrial and Structural Engineering. After the division (foundation of the Department of Building Construction on 1 October 1998) it was renamed the Department of Structures. Since its foundation, the Department of Structures has been focusing on the design, assessment and implementation of steel, concrete, timber and masonry structures in building, industrial and engineering constructions. The Department of Structures has been cooperating on a long-term basis with domestic and foreign scientific and research organizations to solve various research tasks. With regard to the geographical location of the VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava, many scientific and research activities are devoted to the specific problems of the construction of the North Moravia and Silesia region - constructions in undermined areas, constructions in areas with possible floods, remediation, reconstruction and maintenance of industrial buildings. Since its foundation, the Department of Structures has been trying to develop cooperation with practice. Within the framework of this cooperation, the Department of Structures offers mainly professional, assessment and advisory activities. The laboratory of the Department of Structures is systematically being built, which is primarily used for experiments and laboratory analyzes carried out within the framework of scientific research projects, economic activities and teaching.
